Get Involved in Newport Beach

Graduates of the Distinguished Citizen Program and community members alike play an important role in shaping Newport Beach. There are many ways to stay involved, contribute your expertise, and serve the city across civic, public safety, environmental, educational, and cultural efforts.

Below are several pathways for engagement. Opportunities vary throughout the year, and availability is determined by the City or the organization directly.

City Boards, Commissions, and Committees

The City of Newport Beach regularly appoints residents to serve on Boards, Commissions, and Committees that advise City Council and staff on key issues such as environmental stewardship, planning, finance, and community services.

Service typically requires a multi-year commitment and regular attendance at public meetings. Applicants must meet City eligibility requirements.

City Volunteer Programs

The City offers a wide range of volunteer roles that support seniors, libraries, environmental programs, recreation services, and animal care. Opportunities range from ongoing weekly commitments to one-time or seasonal events.

Volunteer programs are coordinated through City departments and are open to residents looking to give back in a hands-on way.

The Newport Beach Fire Department also offers a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, which provides residents with training in disaster preparedness, emergency response, and basic life-safety skills.

Environmental Stewardship

Environmental service is a cornerstone of community involvement in Newport Beach. Residents are encouraged to participate in coastal and neighborhood cleanups, habitat restoration, and environmental education efforts.

Programs are offered through the City as well as local nonprofit organizations focused on preserving Upper Newport Bay and surrounding coastal resources.

Education, Literacy, and Libraries

The Newport Beach Public Library offers volunteer opportunities through Project Adult Literacy (PAL). Volunteers work one-on-one with adult learners to improve reading, writing, and English language skills. Training is provided, and schedules are flexible.

Arts, Culture, and Community Organizations

Newport Beach is home to a vibrant arts and cultural community. Opportunities to volunteer are available through organizations such as the Newport Beach Film Festival, as well as environmental and civic nonprofits including the Newport Bay Conservancy.

Animal Welfare

Volunteers at the Newport Beach Animal Shelter support animal care, enrichment, and daily shelter operations. This is an impactful way to serve the community while supporting animals in need.

Fire and Emergency Services Support

Community members can also support local fire and emergency services through organizations such as the Newport Beach Fire Department Foundation, or the Newport Beach Police Foundation which helps fund equipment, training, and community programs.

Hoag Hospital Volunteer Program

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian offers a robust volunteer program supporting patients, visitors, and hospital staff. Volunteers assist with wayfinding, patient comfort, administrative support, and community-facing services throughout the hospital campus.

Crystal Cove Conservancy

The Crystal Cove State Park supports the preservation and restoration of Crystal Cove through education, conservation, and historic restoration. Volunteers assist with park operations, educational programs, special events, and historic cottages.
